Remembering the Battle of Adwa
In 1896, Ethiopia’s victory at the Battle of Adwa became a defining symbol of courage, independence, and African strength. Within our community’s historical tradition, the Nuer people of Gambella are remembered for helping Emperor Menelik II during the war against Italy. This shared account honours Gambella’s place in a wider Ethiopian story of resilience and victory.

A bond between Nuer heritage and Ethiopia
Our heritage narrative recognizes a close connection between Emperor Menelik II and the Nuer people. It tells of the Emperor’s marriage to a Nuer woman and of their son, Tungkernyang Menelik II, whom this tradition recognizes as an heir connected to the Davidic Solomonic Dynasty throne of Sudan and Ethiopia.

The covenant at Wech Deng
According to our oral history, Nuer Prophet Ngundeng Bong Chan Makuach Jokroal Chany met Emperor Menelik II at Wech Deng, known as the City of God. The prophet presented the Emperor with a bull named Tungkernyang as a sign of union between the Nuer people and Ethiopia.
We share this account with respect as a cultural symbol of peace, kinship, and collective purpose. It invites every visitor to learn from the histories that make our people proud, stronger, and committed to the future of the Kingdom.
